Post-Partum Shivers, TRE & Neurogenic Tremors for Birth, Recovery, Attachment & Wellbeing

Post-Partum Shivers, TRE & Neurogenic Tremors for Birth, Recovery, Attachment & Wellbeing
While more than 40% of women experience ‘post-partum shivers’ spontaneously after birth, involuntary shaking continues to be misunderstood & suppressed in western cultures as a ‘symptom’ of shock, fear, anxiety, panic attacks & PTSD.
Many women therefor carry the deeply ingrained stigma that spontaneous shaking during birth is a sign of fear, weakness or loss of control and deliberately or subconsciously suppress this response even before it occurs.
As ‘neurogenic tremors’ help reduce pain, release muscular tension & regulate the autonomic nervous system, the inhibition of this reflex however may inadvertently increase the likelihood of the failure to progress & the development of unresolved birth-trauma.
Deliberately used by traditional Swahili Midwives, there is an opportunity for Doulas to pre-educate women about the role of ‘neurogenic tremors’ in supporting natural delivery, assisting attachment, improving sleep quality & creating the relaxation required for let-down & successful breast-feeding.
This natural relaxation response can also be deliberately invoked in a safe & controlled way using a process called TRE. Already learnt by an estimated 5 million people around the world, TRE provides a practical, body-based self-care tool to reduce stress & anxiety and optimise wellbeing for both doulas & mothers alike.
This presentation will cover the trauma-informed theory of neurogenic tremors & provide a practical experience of TRE for those who wish to experience it. Further guidance will be available through a free online TRE course with opportunities for additional training for Doulas to learn how to best support this reflex or teach TRE to their clients.
